Article Processing Charges
BT is free to read, so the cost of review, production, hosting and preservation is covered by an Article Processing Charge (APC). It is charged only when a manuscript is accepted. There is no submission fee, and rejected manuscripts are never charged.
APC Rates (USD)
The charge depends on the corresponding author's country income level, using the World Bank classification, and on the article type.
| Country income level | Research Article | Review Article | Case-Based Article | Short Communication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High income | $1,079 | $879 | $779 | $579 |
| Middle income | $779 | $579 | $479 | $379 |
| Low income | $579 | $379 | $279 | $179 |
If language editing is required, an additional $179 USD applies, whatever the article type. See English Language Editing.
Payment
Authors may pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club or Discover) or by wire transfer. Card payments go through a secure partner payment gateway. The options available can vary with your country and card type.
Waivers
A full (100%) waiver may be granted to:
- Corresponding authors from low-income countries, as classified by the World Bank
- Authors who can show genuine financial hardship, including having no institutional or grant funding
- Students and early-career researchers without independent funding, on request with justification
How to Apply
Request a waiver by email when you submit your manuscript. Include your affiliation, country of residence, any sources of research funding, and your reasons. Requests made after acceptance will not be considered.
How Decisions Are Made
The editorial team reviews waiver requests and tells you the outcome before peer review begins. We do it in that order so that your ability to pay, or your waiver status, cannot influence how your manuscript is judged.
